Sierra Nevada is one of the best ski resorts in Spain. The figures speak for themselves: more than 25,000 hotel rooms, 115 pisites, 350 artificial snow cannons, 15 schools catering for all levels, two snowpark ski circuits, it is at the cutting-edge of new snow-based sports. Without doubt, one of the unmissable destinations for fans of the greatest winter sport. And because skiing can work up an appetite, we'd like to offer you a few suggestions for a pit-stop or two.
To truly enjoy all that the Sierra Nevada's gastronomy has to offer, you have to visit La Ruta del Veleta, two restaurants of the same name owned by the twin brothers Miguel and José Pedraza. One is located in Cenes de la Vega (just outside Granada) and the other in the Sierra Nevada. La Ruta del Veleta serves classic, traditional Andalusian cooking using only the finest quality raw materials.
Their specialities include roast lamb, salted fish, fresh pasta with black pudding and pine nuts, "ajoblanco" and venison loin stuffed with foie. Hotel El Guerra is located only 7 kilometres from the ski resort, and its restaurant, La Montaña, is a great option to enjoy an evening meal and some relaxation after an action-packed day of sport. Surrounded by homely decoration, you will be able to enjoy Spanish ham and broad beans, lamb shoulder, suckling pig, pork dishes and, in general, typical and traditional dishes from the region.
Nestled in the very heart of the Sierra Nevada is the restaurant La Bodega, probably one of the most visited at the ski resort thanks to its experience and location. Both the restaurant and café serve breakfasts, snacks, tapas, lunches and afternoon snacks... which can also be enjoyed on the sun deck with views of the slopes.
La Tasca de Antonio is the perfect place to savour char-grilled meats and a selection of Ibérico charcuterie products. If you want to make a quick stop to have something to eat and then get back on the slopes, your best bet is a sandwich or a burger at one of the cabins offering light and quick meal deals, such as the sandwich deli El Campanario, the restaurant Genil right next to Telesilla Stadium, and if you want something to eat or drink practically without getting off of the ski lift, you can take advantage of the stalls next to the Las Yeguas, Montebajo and Cabaña-Slalom ski lifts. El Rincón de Pepe Reyes is another very popular and busy restaurant because of its proximity to the square and the ski lifts where you can enjoy traditional Andalusian cooking.
Going to a hotel to dine is always a good option. The Hotel Maribel is one of the most coveted spots both by true lovers of skiing and those wanting to enjoy a wonderful holiday. This impressive rustic hotel was renovated in 2004 and has a restaurant serving a sumptuous and varied breakfast buffet every morning ensuring you hit the slopes bursting with energy.
Furthermore, it offers à la carte lunches and dinners. It is also a great place for a quiet drink. Hotel Mont Blanc's restaurant also offers spectacular views that will get your day off to a great start. At lunch time, it serves delicious appetisers and sandwiches as well as a buffet for dinner made up of a wide selection of hot and cold dishes and deserts.
