Cantabria has around 9,000 natural caves that contain an unequalled underground archaeological heritage and for this reason is considered a caver's paradise. The majority of these caves are located in Alto Asón, a region that gives you the opportunity to discover utterly different surroundings.
Going down into the heart of the Cantabrian underground world that is rich in archaeological and natural treasures is a fascinating adventure sport experience. In this regard, the best place to do it is, without a doubt, the region of Alto Asón
.
Here, a network of caves allow you to follow underground routes guided by professional cavers. This is an activity where you have to follow instructions and be careful but which is open to all, irrespective of age, physical fitness or experience.
One of the best known routes is that of the Torca del Carlista, which is enormous (three football pitches would fit inside) or the famous Cueto-Coventosa route with very deep wells and the Cañuelas galleries, with their typical mountain-shaped stalactites.
A pilgrimage site for cavers
Each year Cantabria receives the majority of caving enthusiasts that visit the Iberian peninsula. In this regard, Ramales de la Victoria
is the most important town. It has a Centro de Tecnificación en Espeleología (Caving Centre), the first in Spain.
Cavers not only practise a hobby, but in many cases also contribute towards the conservation and protection of the caves and their natural contents. For example, their work has converted the Sistema del Mortillano into the most developed cave in Spain, with 114 kilometres of galleries. Another cave that shouldn't be missed is El Soplao.
For beginners, the alternative Cullalvera route runs from near the town centre of Ramales to the cave through an easily-accessed path through holm-oaks. The cave's enormous dimensions are combined with its massive mouth and the prehistoric paintings that are found deep down inside the cave.
In Alto Asón you cannot miss the opportunity to try the salmon or trout or some of the excellent farmhouse cheeses, such as the Garmillas or Cañedo. For dessert, there's nothing better than some sobao pasiego fritters. These are just some of the region's delicacies. To try them, book a table at the Hotel Torre de Ruesga, in Valle (tel.: 942 641 060), in Solana
restaurant in Ampuero (tel.: 942 676 718) or in Mesón Los Acebos, in Ramales (tel.: 942 678 500).
