YouthFamilyAdventure . Formigal (Huesca), for the best of fun

Surrounding area

The ski resort of Formigal is proud to offer an urban spa in the heart of the Pyrenees. The Spa Aguas Limpias centre lets skiers recover from a hard day on the pistes in a unique way. Before getting together with friends over a hot drink, there's nothing like relaxing in a sauna or taking a bithermal shower. The spa offers many other options, from the ice plunge to restorative treatments with gold, gemstones, and even wine therapy.

The largest resort in Aragon

This kind of service is what makes a resort like this unique. Of course, Formigal also boasts about being the largest resort in Aragon, with a total of 137 kilometres and 101 pistes. Skiing enthusiasts will find everything they are looking for here, as well as facilities for snowshoeing, snowbike trails and a complete snowpark.

Among the novelties this season is Tobogganing. The activity is certainly stimulating. After night falls, the Sallent chairlift takes you up to Trattoria Cantal, at the top of the resort. After dinner, you descend 2.5 kilometres along a well-lit trail on a wooden toboggan. At the foot of the slope, we find Marchica, one of Formigal's night-clubs. This is always busy, with theme nights and performances by well-known DJs.

Dogsledding for all the family

Another fun option, especially for children, is the chance for the whole family to try dogsledding. The sledges are, in theory, easy to manage, and there is always an expert guide on hand. The circuits run through the Valley of Izas-Sarrios (tel.: 689 488 826).

All these activities take place in an area of particular beauty: the TenaValley. This valley is especially suited to art-lovers, and is particularly rich in Romanesque architecture. There are several routes which can be taken through the Alto Gállego region, such as the one which starts at Sabiñánigo and tours the museums and art centres of Serrablo and Larrés.

When mealtimes arrive, the local restaurants combine mountain cooking with Aragonese tradition. Two examples are migas -  breadcrumbs fried with grapes and tomato, and peaches in red wine called sopetas. One restaurant that stands out is Koldo in Sallent de Gállego, which offers the best dishes from the Basque Country and Navarre. In Tramacastilla de Tena, fifteen minutes away by car when the weather is good, the restaurant El Privilegio offers signature dishes with a simple but flavoursome foundation: the meats and vegetables of Northern Aragon.
