The American writer and diplomat Washington Irving is the world's greatest ambassador for Granada and the Alhambra. 2009 marked the 150th anniversary of his first journey there in 1829. 4. From Badajoz to Cáceres, George Borrow's Extremadura

Writer, traveller and philologist, George Borrow arrived in Badajoz to travel Spain between 1836 and 1840. His book, The Bible in Spain, contributed to the romantic vision of Spain in Europe. It was an entertaining travelogue that, among other things, described his adventures in the unknown Extremadura of the 19th century.

5. The Quijote Route: La Mancha in the footsteps of the Ingenious Hidalgo

Cervantes's masterpiece is the perfect historic, literary and artistic guide for discovering the places that appear in the story of Alonso Quijano. The route leads us through the fields of Criptana, Montiel and Calatrava and is dotted with windmills and memories which evoke Quixote.

6. Sierra de Aracena (Huelva): landscapes bathed in water

To the north of the province of Huelva, the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche National Park contains some of Andalusia's most beautiful spots. The rivers, reservoirs and riversides that bathe its whitewashed villages mark the identity of an area famous for its Jabugo cured meats.

7. County of Treviño (Burgos): Along the Ebro river gorges

A rocky amphitheatre created by the action of the tributaries of the Ebro is the natural frontier of the County of Treviño. This historical anomaly (a piece of Burgos in Álava territory) is also a place of great natural beauty, still little known by those who have yet to pay a visit.

The route through the sierra madrileña mountains ventures into two great landscapes: The Sierra del Guadarrama and the Alta del Manzanares district. Along the way are villages that have managed to retain the essence of an area where nature does and undoes at a whim.
