Peace and quiet, silence and nature all make this a special place. In this sense, a stay in Cabañas del Lago de Sanabria comes close to perfection.
A happy couple curls up whilst contemplating nature in the porch of a small wooden house. It is like a scene from a movie, and it is also one of the many possibilities offered by Cabañas del Lago de Sanabria.
It also has the incentive of sleeping in a setting, the Lago de Sanabria Natural Park, in the province of Zamora, where the largest glacier in the Iberian peninsula can be found, as well as other traces of the glacial phenomenon.
Perfect nature to be photographed in
But you don't need to have a passion for geology to enjoy the park. Walking along the signposted paths, strolling along the shore of the lake, fishing for trout, going on bike rides or, simply letting the hours pass by admiring the landscape give more than enough enjoyment.
Another possibility is to observe fauna in its natural setting. It is certainly very easy to see wild roe deer or partridges. The stay by the lake is a delight for photography lovers due to the abundance of charming landscapes, both by the lake and in the most mountainous part.
The cabins are very comfortable as accommodation: two bedrooms, heating, lounge-kitchen, bathroom, washing machine and household items. However, whatever the circumstances and time of year, you should bring warm clothes.
Habones (large beans), stars of the local gastronomy
There are villages well worth visiting both inside and outside the park's limits,: Mercado del Puente, Galende or Pedrazales. On the other hand, it would be a shame to visit this area and not try its gastronomy. Although Sanabria is in the province of Zamora and the food is typically of mountain origin, its proximity to Galicia offers some surprises, such as the special preparation of octopus.
However, the typical local product is habones, a larger derivative of the white bean. A good place to try this cooking is in the La Chopera restaurant, in Puente de Sanabria. Its dishes are real tonics, cooked traditionally: over a slow flame in a clay casserole, stirring from time to time with a wooden spoon. In Puebla de Sanabria you cannot miss the Posada Real de las Misas, where you can taste the region's habones and cheeses.
