The peninsula of Getaria as a backdrop: Hotel Iturregi

This traditional Basque mansion has been turned into a four star hotel maintaining its essence, which is a true accomplishment, something guests can savour by simply enjoying its charm. With views of the famous Ratón de Getaria, Hotel Iturregi knows how to seduce its visitors.

The Hotel Iturregi has six highly spacious rooms and two suites. With different décor in each room it is hard to distinguish them from the suites. The natural light, the bright decoration and the spectacular rooms are what give the establishment its luxury category.

The rooms are named after villages of the Basque country, bringing our surroundings to the fore: Jaizkibel looks out on the mountain of the same name, Zarauz has views of the bay of neighbouring village and Getaria has views of the town's lighthouse, perched on the green cliffs overlooking the Cantabrian sea.

Txakolí vineyards and the footprints of Elcano

The Iturregi caserío (farmhouse) is surrounded by vines bearing fruit that will become txakoli, the prized Basque white wine. Guests can enjoy strolling through the vineyards, through Getaria's old quarter to the San Salvador church, or following the footsteps of Juan Sebastián Elcano, the town's most famous inhabitant. He captained the ship Victoria, the first to circumnavigate the globe in 1522.

Zarauz is also easily reached on foot, taking one of the long strolls that are typical of the Basques. If the weather is not good enough for taking a stroll, then make the most of the hotel's relaxed atmosphere where you can have a good read or enjoy conversation in one of the armchairs of the windowed porch. Pleasures that help us relax and savour each moment.

In search of a restaurant

Meals cannot be taken in the hotel, because, surprisingly, it does not have a restaurant. Perhaps because the proprietors have not wanted to compete with the very interesting range of restaurants in the area. The best option if one is looking for a good restaurant in Getaria is, without a doubt the Elkano (awarded with one Sol Repsol), managed by Pedro Arregui and offering the best grilled seafood and fish. It has a lot to do with the raw materials but his talent is also undeniable. For a romantic dinner, as you enter Zarauz you will find Aiten Etxe (tel.: 943 831 825). Offering a more intimate and charming atmosphere you can try Cantabrian delicacies. All well accompanied by txakolí wine.

San Sebastián is close by (just 25 kilometres) and, as one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in Spain, must be seen. We recommend you take a stroll through the old quarter, the Alameda del Boulevard or the promenade of the Concha to Ondarreta beach and the El Peine de los Vientos statue by Eduardo Chillida.

If you wish to see other sculptures by Chillida, you can visit the Chillida-Leku museum in Hernani  . An open air museum featuring a 12 hectare field where you can touch and feel all the sculptures except those inside the Zabalaga caserío, where he worked on his pieces.
