A luxury hórreo (traditional raised granary) at the Quinta de San Amaro (Pontevedra)From the Quinta San Amaro there are clear views of the vineyards, chapels and farmhouses of Meaño. The hotel complex is made up of three stone buildings with the hórreo (the traditional granary of Galicia, Asturias and Cantabria) as its centrepiece, and several new buildings.
It recreates a classic atmosphere, combining well traditional construction and interiors with openly modern ones. Its cosy decoration is neither garish nor overly rustic.
Flowers, fresh air, silence and privacy abound in all of the 14 rooms (top floor rooms have balconies) of the hotel. Doing nothing and resting by the pool or solarium, weather permitting, or reading a good book in the beautiful library are the most attractive options.
Route along the windmills and wine cellars
If you are looking for more activity, you can take a horse ride in the surroundings, rent mountain bikes or hike some of the trails suggested by the Concello de Meaño (Town Council). The most popular routes are those of the water-mill, the San Cibrán das Cobas viewpoint route and the wine route, with visits to 13 wineries in the Cambados area. Meaño is in the Salnés valley, and forms part of the Rías Baixas designation of origin label. Albariño, Galicia's best white wine, is its most important product.
The managers of the Quinta de San Amaro are quick to advise their guests on what activities they can enjoy. Weather permitting, they can visit the Meis or the La Toja golf courses. You can also visit the Sanxenxo beach, just seven kilometres from the hotel. Walk the sand at low tide and enjoy a unique sensation.
Diving in O Grove
You can also go diving at the nearby town of O Grove. The Centro de Buceo Bahía-Sub diving centre organises trips to the island of La Toja and the Arousa estuary. If the temperature of the water makes you change your mind you can also go for a boat ride. A guide gives a talk on the population of scallops and mussels while the passengers enjoy a snack.
For more substantial meals, Sanxenxo itself offers a wide variety of cuisine, logically based on seafood and fish. Examples are Mesón Don Camilo (tel.: 986 691 124) and La Taberna de Rotillo (tel.: 986 720 200, awarded two Repsol Soles), known for their revolutionary use of seaweed in cooking. Meat lovers can see for themselves the quality of Galician beef at the Asador do Museo (tel.: 986 721 133), also in Sanxenxo.
