RelaxationYouthFamilyCosmopolitan Valldemossa, in Majorca. In the footsteps of Chopin and George Sand

Surrounding area

“All that the poet and the painter could dream of, nature has created in this place”. So said Aurora Dudevant, the real name of the poet George Sand, when referring to Valldemossa. Sand arrived in Majorca in the winter of 1838. Accompanied by her lover, the famous Polish pianist Frédéric Chopin.

The cell where Chopin stayed

Chopin and George Sand stayed in two modest cells of the Carthusian monastery of Valldemossa. From there they enjoyed, in Chopin's words “the most beautiful place in the world”. Today it is possible to visit cell number 4, where the musician stayed, and the piano room which houses the very instrument he ordered to be brought from Poland.

The route around the main building, the Palacio del Rey Sancho, includes the monastery, the library, the cloister gardens and the halls. Today it is possible to book them for receptions, meetings or dinners.

Since it is no longer possible to stay at the Real Cartuja, it was seized by the state in 1835, the best option to try and understand first hand how Federico Chopin and George Sand felt is to stay at the Hotel Valldemosa. It is located in the centre of the valley, raised on a hillock with a view of the Tramuntana mountains, the Cartuja and Palma de Mallorca bay. A wondrous sight.

Here we can see that Chopin did not lie. The hotel is located in the midst of an olive grove and has all the comforts that the sickly musician could not enjoy back in his day. The rooms are named after Frederic Chopin, George Sand, Miguel de Unamuno and Rubén Darío and all have private balconies.

Details for an intimate atmosphere

The hotel management, aware that guests are looking for romanticism, offer a range of details that make the stay even more pleasant: a welcome drink and a candlelight dinner. Health and beauty treatments can also be enjoyed in the rooms. Since in theory you will have to leave the room at some point, you can also enjoy the spa with indoor pool, sauna and jacuzzi; check the national and international press, and stroll through the vegetable garden and fruit orchard.

To enjoy a romantic meal you don't even have to leave the hotel. Valldemossa restaurant (tel.: 971 612 626, recommended by the Repsol Guide) is one of the best in Majorca. It has a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere and, more importantly, serves delicacies such as monkfish broth with clams and pistachios. If you eat lunch there, then head towards Deià for dinner, where you will find Ca’n Costa, housed in an oil mill in the mountains. There you can try the comforting Majorca soup.
